Eli Manning Being A Good Sport

February 24th, 2010 cherryb 1 comment

St. Vincent’s hospital in New York has a little bit of a debt problem…about $700 million worth, according to the New York Post. They also owed New York Giants Quarterback Eli Manning over $500,000 for marketing work he’s done for them, but Eli, aware of their debt problems, told them no thanks. He wants them to keep their money. He’ll continue doing fund-raising work for the hospital for free, too.

Obviously, it’s the right thing for Eli to do. What kind of person — especially one with Eli’s money — would demand that a bankrupt hospital keep paying him, especially when they’re already cutting salaries and jobs? “Shut down your Oncology ward! The quarterback needs his money!” No, that’s not quite Eli’s style.

Capture

Marion Barber capped an 8-minute, 13-play drive at the start of the third quarter with a 2-yard touchdown run, his second score of the game, and the Cowboys continued to hold the NFL’s No. 1 offense out of the end zone.

Dallas faced a third-and-5 at the beginning of its first second-half possession, but Tony Romo scrambled and found Miles Austin for a 13-yard gain. Third-string wide receiver Kevin Ogletree dragged his feet along the sideline to haul in a 17-yard catch three plays later, and the Saints offered little resistance the rest of the way.

New Orleans had a chance to cut into the deficit after Courtney Roby’s 67-yard kickoff return, but Devery Henderson dropped a long pass in the end zone. Anthony Spencer then raced in untouched and sacked Drew Brees to stop the drive.

Romo threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Miles Austin, and Barber scored from 3 yards as the Cowboys took a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Nick Folk added a 44-yard field goal three seconds before halftime.

Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware, who did not practice all week after suffering a neck sprain that sent him to the hospital six days earlier against the San Diego Chargers, forced a Brees fumble on a sack late in the first half, leading to Folk’s field goal.

The Saints lost running back Reggie Bush to an apparent right leg injury in the second quarter. Bush caught a pass in the middle of the field, pulled up, hobbled to the sideline and headed straight to the bench. He did not return in the third quarter.

The Saints got on the board when Brees led a 12-play 75-yard drive, completing a 35-yard pass to Marques Colston to the Cowboys 17. The Saints stalled from there, setting up Garrett Hartley’s 34-yard field goal that cut the lead to 14-3.

After holding the Saints to a three-and-out on the opening possession, the Cowboys struck first when Romo hit Austin deep down the sideline. Austin beat rookie cornerback Malcolm Jenkins on a stop and go pattern, and safety Roman Harper could not get over in time to prevent the touchdown.

With the catch, Austin went over 1,000 yards for the first time in his career. He had 999 yards entering the game.

Thewent three-and-out again, and Patrick Crayton returned a punt 28 yards to set up an eight-play, 60-yard touchdown drive. The big strike was a 26-yard Austin catch-and-run to the New Orleans 15. Tashard Choice converted a third down with a 4-yard run out of the wildcat formation before Barber dove across the goal line for a 3-yard score.

The Cowboys have lost their past two games and are 3-7 in December under coach Wade Phillips, but everything went right in the first three quarters.

Romo was 22 for 34 for 312 yards.

Brees was 29 for 45 for 298 yards. Highlights

Amazing Game-Winners

November 30th, 2009 peterpopoff No comments

Vince Young was going to be considered the proverbial goat if the Titans lost to the Cardinals on Sunday, having egged hard at the end of the first half by not giving Rob Bironas a shot at a field goal to close the half.

Fortunately for Young, he marched the Titans an amazing 99 yards in just over two minutes before throwing a ridiculous game-winning touchdown pass to Kenny Britt as time expired.
Oh yeah, and Young managed to throw for 387 yards passing against the Cards, his career high. I think it’s safe to say he enjoys playing against Matt Leinart.

The Colts (11-0) have now won 20 consecutive regular-season games, one shy of the 21-game record set by the Patriots from 2006-2008. What’s more, Sunday’s second-half headlock on the Texans (5-6) means Indianapolis has won 11 or more games in seven consecutive seasons, an NFL-best mark for regular season dominance.

Still, if you ask the Colts about their undefeated record, their 20-win streak in the regular season or that division title that became theirs while they were on the plane back to Indianapolis, you won’t get much of a stir.

Stupid twitter!!!

November 9th, 2009 peterpopoff No comments

Those two tweets above were regrettable. Johnson is having a terrible season though, at 358 yards on 132 carries. The average of 2.7 yards per carry is well below his career average of 4.4. He hasn’t found the end zone yet this season. Sure, frustration is understandable, but keep it in house. Maybe air it out to your boys. Don’t be stupid and put it out there for everyone to see. (Although, now Johnson has clearly learned his lesson and made his Twitter account private.)

When one user on Twitter, jaredlaunius, called out L.J.’s hypocriscy of criticizing his coach given his own poor play, it didn’t end well. He lashed out and used a homophobic slur. So yeah, not Johnson’s finest Sunday.

I love having athletes on Twitter. I think it’s a lot of fun to get some insight into the lives of a lot of these guys. This, however, is the downside. Players have found an entirely new avenue to create PR messes for their teams. I don’t suspect this is the last we’ll see of it. You’ve also got to wonder, based on poor play plus off-the-field headaches, how much longer we’ll see him in a Chiefs uni.

UPDATE: Well, it got even more ugly. Johnson told reporters to get their “fa—- a– out of here” today when the media tried to talk with him in the locker room today.
