PSN Crash Update!

March 1st, 2010 cherryb No comments

Ok, so I have been searching on the net all day for any kind of update regarding the PSN crash of the fat PS3. While checking my mail, I read on yahoo that Sony is now telling everyone who has a fat PS3 to “NOT USE YOUR PS3” When I read this I was kind of upset because I use my console for other reasons besides playing games. So now because of a bug on “their” part, 95% of people in the world can’t even turn on their PS3.

So, what’s the deal? Naturally, speculation initially focused on the PlayStation Network itself, but it turns out the problem lies with the PS3 hardware—specifically, the glossy, older-model PS3 consoles, not the  new slim PS3. In a post on the official playstation blog, Sony says that the glitch “is being caused by a bug in the clock” which people are guessing may have gotten tripped up in the changeover from February 28 – March 1.

Symptoms of the bug include your PS3’s internal clock being reset to Jan. 1, 2000; the inability to set the clock via the Internet, or to connect to the PSN at all; PSN video store rentals that won’t play, even though their rental windows haven’t expired; and, worst of all, disappearing “trophy” data for some games, with the message “Failed to install trophies; please exit your game” when you try to launch the said games.

Sony says it “hopes” to get the problem fixed “within the next 24 hours,” but it has also issued a sobering warning: “In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.”

So I’m wondering what people will do now that they can’t even watch movies, watch anime, surf the net……can’t do basically anything what so ever on their PS3. As for myself, I’ll be stuck on my computer till I get tired enough to go to bed instead of watching movies on my system while trying to go to sleep. Hopefully Sony will have this fixed by later tonight or tomorrow. And HEY Sony, maybe a warning will be better next time then having your customers panic. Hopefully we’ll get a notice to when their done fixing the problem and we can go on with our gaming lives.

PSN Crash!

February 28th, 2010 cherryb 3 comments

Sony Playstation 3 owners in multiple regions (including North America, Europe, and Australia) are facing the inability to sign into the PlayStation Network online gaming service, corrupted user data and inability to play some games online or off. The problems are accompanied by the 8001050F error code.

When they try to load up certain games — including the just-released Heavy Rain — they receive the error code and the following message: “Registration of the trophy information could not be completed. The game will now quit.” After the message, the system reboots. The problems seem to mostly affect older, “fat” models of the PS3. Slim models are either not impacted or affected far less frequently.

Trophies are prizes given to players for accomplishing certain tasks in each game; the trophies are synced with the PlayStation Network so players can compare their achievements. Gaming blog Joystiq found reports that the consoles were having their dates reset to 12/31/1999; that might somehow be related to the trophy syncing problems.

Not quite sure what time this all happened, but I have seen posts on different blogs saying they couldn’t log onto the PSN around 4:30, then I have read other post that said somewhere around 6:00. I just currently turned mine on around 10:00 and I couldn’t log onto the PSN even though I was on it practically all of the morning. Some people can’t play games like Tekken 6, Heavy Rain or other trophy enabled games, while others (like me) can play their trophy enabled games like Brutal Legend and Assassin Creed. Also apparently themes and games that you have bought and downloaded from the PSN aren’t working and have said it’s a corrupted file.

So hopefully Sony will fix this problem soon because there are a lot of angry customers out there just waiting to go play online.

Why Chrome Will be Your Next Browser

February 3rd, 2010 cherryb No comments

Google’s Web browser is about to make the leap from upstart to leader of the pack.

Google Chrome’s market share numbers are skyrocketing, blowing past Safari and Opera to become the number three most-widely-used Web browser. That’s pretty impressive, and I don’t think it’s going to stop there. I fully expect it to overtake Firefox and challenge, if not beat, Microsoft Internet Explorer sometime in the next 5 years.

It took Firefox most of this decade to achieve its solid number two status, but the one-and-a-half-year-old Chrome is growing faster and, in some ways, developing more quickly than Firefox ever did. The question, though, is not whether or not Chrome will beat other browsers, but why it is rising while Firefox seems to have stalled or is falling.

Over the years, most tech-savvy users I’ve talked to have said they run Firefox. It’s faster—I agree—and it has amazing features, which is true. The Awesome bar, also known as Firefox’s address bar, works better than virtually any other address bar in the business. When I start to type in a URL, its best guesses are almost always on target. Those same tech-savvy users have always touted Firefox’s extensive add-on library. I use a handful of them, but I’m not an extension nut like some people I know. I find it fascinating how, say, a “27 Best Firefox Extensions” story can kill on Digg and drive thousands of page views. What, exactly, is the attraction to stuff you can add to your browser? Does everything we use need to be customized?

Firefox has also, traditionally, been faster than the competition. It usually loaded pages lickety split, and it did so with an admirable level of precision. The pages looked the way they should and everything worked most of the time.

Collapsible Surfboard

January 7th, 2010 cherryb No comments

As apartments and cars become increasingly compact, that surfboard you never seem to find the time to use just takes up more and more space. Nicholas Notara has decided to devote some time to the problem and has created the collapsible surfboard. This carbon-fiber board has been carefully designed to maintain the balance and weight of its traditional counterpart, but with the help of two pins and a quick release lever can halve in size. A hot-swappable fin system completes the board with style and presents a viable concept that may make a surfboard purchase not such a bad idea.

Analogue Digital Mixer

January 5th, 2010 cherryb No comments

Concept gadgets are great, as they give you an idea about what designers can do when they don’t have to be concerned about the mundane stuff. The concept of the day is an ADM (Analogue/Digital Mixer) by the designer Christian Sterngren. ADM is a concept device for organizing music productions on a mixerboard and is based on envisaging the actual route of the audio signal with the help of conventional stuffs in an ordered way and in different combinations.

Since the day the first analogue mixers were launched, the mixerboards have gone through a series of development phases. The concept mixerboard offers a plenty of control possibilities. The concept lets the users exactly know that how and where the audio signal is being maneuvered. The best part of the design is that you can enrich yourselves with the vintage feel of the analogue mixerboards. Read More

inPulse Smartwatch

October 26th, 2009 peterpopoff No comments

The inPulse Smartwatch for BlackBerry is being produced by Allerta, and now that it’s official, we can safely say that it’ll rely on Bluetooth in order to bring incoming emails, text messages and other alerts from your handset to your wrist (or your ankle, if you roll like that). As for specs, you’re looking at a 1.3-inch OLED display, glass lens, full metal body, vibrating motor, microUSB port and a rechargeable battery that’s good for around four days of “normal use.” inPulse users will have to install a special BlackBerry application in order to pass along information, but those hoping to use their watch to actually send messages will be sorely disappointed. It’s up for pre-order now at $149, and if all goes well, the first ones will ship out in February.

Walmart Cellphone Service

October 14th, 2009 Hostile LOx No comments

Walmart has a new cellphone service called straight talk with two price tiers.

The first offers 1,000 minutes, 1,000 texts and 30MB of data for $30. That seems alright, but for $45, you get unlimited anytime minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data.

The designers at Ocean Observations also have an idea for managing the mess of home screens that comes along with app hoarding. Tapping the home button would bring up a paneled Exposé page. From there, you could easily jump to a specific page, rather than swiping a hundred times to find Peggle.
